Even seasoned observers are stunned by the regime’s renewed campaign of killing. Families of the condemned are asking why the West doesn’t seem to care

THE SUNDAY TIMES 16/Nov/2025

Iran is entering one of its deadliest periods of state executions since the mass killings of 1988. More than 1,025 people have been executed in the first nine months of 2025, with 204 in September alone. At least 17 political prisoners now face imminent execution, many accused of links to the banned MEK — charges that human-rights groups say are often fabricated to hide political motives.

Families describe constant terror, with pre-dawn phone calls signalling impending death. Prisoners face “slow-motion torture” on death row, overcrowded cells and last-minute sham “review” hearings. Minority groups, activists from the Women, Life, Freedom movement and young dissidents are especially targeted.

Analysts say Tehran is exploiting a moment when global attention is fixed on wars and US politics, using executions to project strength amid economic collapse, sanctions, and recent Israeli–US strikes on Iranian intelligence and nuclear sites. Human rights organisations warn of coerced confessions, secret trials and industrial-scale “state-sanctioned murder”. Families say Western governments’ silence is enabling the killings.
